1. Place The Pizza Stone In Your Cold Oven
It is important that your oven is not on when you put the pizza stone in because it needs to heat up with the oven.
Be sure to place the stone on the lowest rack in your oven so that it is as close to the heating element as it can possibly get.
2. Crank That Oven Temperature

So, at this point you should have your pizza fully assembled and ready to go on the pizza stone.

The magic answer here is a pizza peel.
If you don’t have one, then there are some pizza peel alternatives that you can use – but you really need to order yourself a pizza peel, and soon!
Because you have to be able to slide the pizza onto the hot stone without burning yourself, without it sticking, and without destroying the raw pizza.
5. Leave The Pizza To Bake
Once you’ve slid your pizza onto the stone using your pizza peel, all you have to do is close the oven and wait for it to be done.
How long should you cook your pizza?
That’s really up to you.
Personally, I like to start with 10 minutes and see how done the the toppings are and then either take the pizza out or cook for a few more minutes.
So, experiment and see how long works best for your preferred pizza doneness.
6. Remove The Pizza
Once your pizza has cooked to your satisfaction, it’s time to remove it from the oven and the pizza stone.
But first, power off the oven so that you’re not wasting gas or electricity.
You don’t want to burn yourself, so you’re going to need that pizza peel again.
Use it to slide under the pizza and lift it right off the hot pizza stone.
7. Leave The Pizza Stone To Cool
Resist the urge to remove the hot pizza stone from the oven once you’re done cooking the pie.
If you remove the baking stone before it cools, then you run the risk of it cracking.
Instead, you should turn the oven off (if you haven’t already done so) and then leave the stone in your oven to cool down.

In addition to knowing how to use the stone, there are few other essential things that newbies should know.
Cleaning
You’re going to want to clean that pizza stone like any other dish or pan – but stop right there!
Pizza stones are made of a porous material, so you cannot wash them like any other dish.
Instead, try to simply brush off any food debris after the stone has cooled.
If you need to, though it is not advise, you can try a damp sponge to remove any stubborn food spills from your pizza baking adventures.
Oven Placement
Though it is typically ideal to put the pizza baking stone on the lowest rack in your oven, feel free to experiment with placement.
As a general rule of thumb, the closer the stone is to the heating element in the bottom of the oven, then the crispier your pizza crust will be in the end.
